The Art of Receiving and Giving
What do you feel you are worth?
I don't just mean in the sense of money or things or belongings, but what are you worth? What is the feeling that comes up when you ask yourself this question? The art of receiving and giving can show you the answers if you are unsure or do not know. Even if you think you know the skills of the art of receiving and giving, you can learn how to deepen this vital aspect of your personal relationship to, and with, the world.
Receiving is a form of communication and acknowledgement. Do you find it hard to receive gifts, worldly success, praise, compliments, attention, love, friendship? Would you rather give than receive? The old saying 'that its better to give than receive' is simply wrong. If you find it hard to truly receive, it's hard to give, because all of you is not involved--maybe just the fearful or vulnerable part of you. Some people find it hard to receive, because it makes them feel vulnerable.
Yet in every experience we have and ever had there has been receiving and giving going on, an interplay of these two crucial dynamics of life. A lot of what we think we are is made up of moments of giving and receiving. Often we can define our lives by them, even if we do not recognise it as receiving and giving.
Think about your day, how many instances of receiving and giving take place, as your go about your daily life. Hundreds? Thousands? See if you can identify a few. What do they have in common? You. They have you in common. Think of opportunities or situations missed, misunderstood or lost because of your receiving and giving skills. Learning the art of receiving and giving enables you to be in the world, in the heart of your daily life without feeling overwhelmed, undervalued, less than or powerless.
